Bible Knowledge
Monday, March 26, 2007
For those students who are interested in taking Bible Knowledge for their SPM examinations, GRACE Assembly, Klang (Dewan GRACE, Chi Liung) is having Bible Knowledge classes. Form 4 and Form 5 are welcomed. But I think it's too late to decide whether you wanna take Bible Knowledge for the Form 5s. Pn. Suraya almost stopped me from taking Bible Knowledge because I didn't include the subject in my registration form (long story, read my blog if you want). Please support and take this subject for SPM. If you don't, the government might use the reason for lack of students taking Bible Knowledge to cancel this subject in the SPM examinations. So don't miss this opportunity to glorify God's name. The lessons are free. For more information, ask me!!! Or just post a comment in this post. God bless.

Introduction to the Occult
This topic is to warn you people of what the occults can do to you.
The word "occult" comes from the Latin word "occultus" and it carries the idea of things hidden, secret and mysterious. Under this designation the occult would include witchcraft, magic, horoscopes, palm reading, fortune telling, ouija boards, tarot cards, satanism, spiritism, demons, crystal balls, ESP, palmistry and more.
A word of warning. By studying this lesson, I do not wish to arouse your curiosity about the occult. Playing or experimenting with the occult can lead to serious consequences that can affect you both spiritually and mentally. You only need to know to the level of some knowledge but not to a level of fascination, involvement or obsession. The bible denounces any or all involvement with the occult. (deut 18:9-14 and Gal 5:20)
1. Astrology and Horoscopes. a. Astrology is an ancient practice that assumes that the position of the stars and planets has direct influence upon people and events. b. It supposes that one's life patterns can be charted by determining the position of the stars and planets at the time of one's birth. c. The problem with astrology is that there is no scientific proof that the stars can fortell events and influence life. Furthermore, astrologers do not interpret a horoscope consistently from one person to another. As such, who is right? d. Even the Bible has specific verses condemnin the use of astrology in Isaiah 47:13-15, Jeremiah 10:2 and Deutronomy 4:19. e. Numerology is closely linked to astrology where numbers are understood to be linked to stars and planets ablt to predict a person's future.
2. Fortune Telling and its various appearances. a. Fortune telling is the art of forecasting the future supposedly by supernatural means. b. A fortune teller, also knowns as a "diviner" mostly use props to supposedly recieve his supernatural abilities like palmistry, cards, mirror mantic etc. c. The bible never says fortunetellers can predict the future. But the person, instead of looking to God or the Bible for directions in his life, now consults a fortuneteller who uses occultic means to recieve direction is very deceived. d. Palmistry is the art of divination by study of the hands. The hand is divided into areas and lines or with graphology, which the study of handwritting analysis. e. As in astrology, there is no standard way the results are interpreted and neither is there any scientific evidence it work or it is true. f. Cartomancy forecasts the future by using cards and the most commonly used cards are Tarot cards. There is again nothing scientific about Tarot cards and the majority of the readings are nothing more than guesswork and the diviners ability to guess human nature. However, there are some readings which are genuinely supernatural since it is so linked to the spirit world. g. Mirror Mantic is the use of crystal balls, rock crystals, still waters etc as "mirrors of the future". In this method of divination, the one gazing into the crystal supposedly enters into a state of clairvoyance where he can see events and things happening in the future of far away.
3. Hypnotism a. Hypnotism can be defined as a mean of bringing on an artifical state of sleep or reduced consciousness. b. Hypnotism is used in a variety of ways - some put themselves into self-hypnosis to try and kicik off some bad habits like smoking or to make themselves insensitive to pain. c. Some doctors use it in an attempt to diagnose or even treat some illness. d. The occultist uses it to control the behaviour of an individual. The danger is that in hypnosis, you can lose control of your mind and actions and at such times, eveil forces can make you commit actions that are very wrong.
4. White and Black MAgic. a. By the term magic, we are not referring to the type called "sleight of hand" magic where it is nothing but an illusion and uses tricks as part of show business & entertainment. b. Magic can be defined as the attempt to master supernatural forces in order to produce visible effects. It consists of spells, potions and charms. c. White magic is said to be the used of magical powers and abilities in an unselfish manner for the benefit of others. However, it is still the use of powers from an ungodly source so it should in no way be practices. It is not as innocent as Harry Pottr books suggests. d. Black magic is the use of magic to harm others. Either way, both black and white magic should not be used as it has it origins from Satan.
5. Neucromancy a. The main idea behind necromancy is that spirits of the dead have the capacity to communicate with people here on earth through mediums. b. Also with the help of the spirits of the death, the medium supposedly is able to foretell the future. In most sessions, called "séances" the medium is so called "possessed" by the spirit of the dead person and changes his/her voice and is able to so call prove it is the spirit of the dead person by telling thing he/she did in the past. c. Many people are attracted to neucromancy as they think they can contact or communicate with the spirits of their loved ones who have diead. d. However, many mediums are nothing but frauds and con men who uses many magic tricks to deceive the public that they are really communicating with the dead. e. Note that God said in the Old Testament that anyone found to be a sorceress, medium shall be put to death (Exo 22:18, Lev 20:27)
6. Superstition a. There are many phenomena attributed to the occult which are, in reality nothing but superstition. Superstition is the belief or practice not based on fact but upon fear or ignorance of the unknown. b. The number 13 is supposed to bring bad luck. To the Chinese it's the number 4. c. Does sweeping the floor on Chinese New Year mean you sweep away all the good luck? d. Amulets worn are also an object of superstition. They are worn in the belief they can protect the wearer from dangers, disease or for good luck. An example are using crystals in Fung Shui or even a cross for a Christian

Mormonism Or The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
1. It's historical background. a. The founder of Mormonism is Joesph Smith Jr. (1805-1844). At 1820, he claimed to have had a vision of God the Father and God the Son. b. In his vision, he claims that he was told that all churches were abominations to God and he was being charged as a prophet to restore the true goespel to the world. c. He then claim to have had a second vision in 1823 the angel called Moroni appeared to him and told him about a number of gold plates which he would recover and translate. d. Smith then claimed the finally uncovered the plates in 1827 which were inscribed with "reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics" and he was able to do the translating with a huge pair of spectacles called the "Urim and Thummim" Note: The Urim and Thummin are actually objects used by priest in the Old Testament to determine the will of God (Exodus 28:29-30, Levites 8:8). e. From 1827 to 1829 he "translated" these plates, and in 1830 he published the result as The Book OF Mormon and formed his church. f. While awaiting trial for destroying a newspaper office, which wrote articles against him, an angry mob stormed the jail and killed him. g. Brigham Young took over as the new "First President" and "prophet" of the church. He lead thousands of Mormons on a difficult journey until they arrived in Salt Lake City of Utah 1847, which is still their headquaters today. h. He started the practice of polygamy and had 25 wives. The church finally stopped this practice in 1890 when the USA government threatened to confiscate their property. But they substituted this practice with "celestical marriages." i. Currently, the Mormon church claims 10 million members worldwide (1999) and 60,850 missionaries in 2001.
2. The Theology of Mormonis.
a. Mormons claim not to be either Catholic or Protestant but to be the only true church. If it has not been for Joseph Smith, there would be no salvation outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. b. The Mormon Church has 4 accepted works, the Bible, the Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Prince. The present prophet's words are also a source of authority but they put more trust in the words of the 3 books than the Bible. c. They teach that Jesus Christ was a preexistent spirit like the rest of us. He was set apart from the rest by the first born of God. In short, Jesus is not the unique Son of God. d. The Mormon doctrine of God is contrdictory to what the Bible teaches, as Mormons believe in many gods and teach that God himself was once a man. In short, Mormons are polytheistic in its doctrine.
3. The Book of Mormon - some problems. a. Joseph Smith only allowed a few "witnesses" to see the alleged "golden plates". which were later taken up to heaven by the angel Moroni. There were no reliable witnesses of the plates. b. The Book of Mormons purports to be a history of 2 ancient civilizations, which were located on the American continent. No proof is found that they ever exist. c. They claim the Book of Mormon was buried in A.D. 428 but it contained about 25,000 words verbatim from the King James Version of the Bible written in 1611. d. The book is full of historical and factual errors and about 4,000 word corrections have been made to it from the 1830 edition (which he claimed to be divinely given) to the current edition. Yet the Mormons claim that the bible is not very reliable compared to their Book of Mormon. e. Many historians believe Joseph Smith plagiarized (copied) a romance book called Manuscript Found by Solomon Spaulding to write the Book of Mormon.
4. Other practices and believes of the Mormons. a. One of the most bizarre practices of the Mormons is the baptism of the dead and the laying of hands on the dead. Since Mormons believe that baptism is necessary for salvation, they compile genealogies of the "Gentile" ancestors and baptize them by proxy (on behalf). b. They also minimize hell and say that all men will go to one of the three heavens. Unbelievers go to the telestial heaven, religious non-Mormons go to the terrestial heaven, and good Mormons go to the celestial heavens and the highest reward for a Mormon is become a god and rule a seprate planet with his family. c. The earth is one of several inhabited planets ruled by gods and goddess, who were at one time humans on other planets. d. The Trinity consists of three gods born in different times and places, the Father begot the Son and Holy Spirit through goddess wife in heaven.
5. Conclusion a. The Mormons have managed to grow in numbers because of its good reputation with the public of its high moral standards and emphasis on the family. b. It also offers benefits to be a member, it offer social security and takes care of its members and has lots of programs for its members like sports, hobbies, music, dances, etc. With this it has low level of juvenile delinquency, testifying to the success of church-centered programs. c. Young Mormon children are taught from young that it is their duty to the church to serve a mission from the time they leave high school. d. Since the teaching of Mormonism cannot be reconciled with the Bible, Mormons can be delievered from this cults by an honest study of the Bible. They should be challenged to compare the Bible with the teachings of the Mormonism.

Note: Other Christian cults not covered by this lessons but you should be aware of: 1. Christian Science. (polytheistic, pantheist views) 2. The Unification Church of Moonies. (Rev Moon is the messiah) 3. Seventh Day Adventism (50:50: but funny teachings on keepinh the Old Testament commandments). 4. The True Jesus Church (origins - China, Oneness view, exclusivist) 5. The Local Church (origins = China, Oneness view, exclusivist)

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES
1. It's historical background. a. The founder of Jehovah's Witnesses is "Pastor" Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916) in Pennsylvania, USA. b. He got his title "Pastor" because he taught a small bible class and his students gave him the title but he was never ordained or theologically trained. c. In 1884, he formed Zion's Watchtower Tract Society, it was renamed the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society in 1896 and moved its headquaters to Brooklyn, New York. d. He was an extremely egotistic man and made many absurd claims about himself and his writings like claiming he was as good as St. Paul or Martin Luther. He also said that it was better to read his books (a seven volume series called Studies in the Scriptures) than the Bible. Nothe - his books were filled with errors. e. His wife successfully sued him for divorce in 1913 on the grounds of adultery, conceit, egoism and domination. f. In 1917, Joseph Franklin Rutherford succeeded "Pastor" Russell as president. Rutherford was a lawyer and an assistant judge. Using Isaiah 41:10, he decided to rename the movement Jehovah's Witnesses in 1931. g. Groups meeting together are called congregrations, but the places they meet are called Kingdom Halls and not churches. h. Total membership in the JW is around 6.1 million as at end 2001 with 5.1 million members outside of the USA.
2. The theology of the Jehovah's Witnesses. a. Generally the members are very zealous and missionary minded with a "door to door" approach to evangelism. b. They claim to accept the Bible as the only authority for truth but in reality, the only real authority is the official system of interpretation and no devotion are tolerated. c. Their theology denies every cardinal belief in historic Christianity including the Trinity, the diety of Jesus Christ, His bodily resurrection, salvation by grace through faith and eternal punishment for the wicked. d. JW uses the name "Jehovah" for God and believe that Jehvah is the only true name for God.
3. The Trinity and the Deity of Jesus Christ. a. The Watchtower makes it very clear it does not believe in the doctrine of the Trinity. They say that Satan was in the inventor of this doctrine. With the denial of this doctrine, they also do not believe that both Jesus and the Holy Spirit is God. b. JW says that Jesus Christ was a created being, the second greatest personage of the universe. Eg. If JEsus Christ was God, then during Jesus' death, God was dead in the grave? c. This denial of the deity of Jesus Christ is not new in the history of the Church. It is merely a revival of the teaching known as Arianism (named after a man called Arius, declared as a heretic in the 4th century). d. To the JW, Jesus is not equal to Jehovah God. He was rather, Michael the Archangel in his preexistent state, having a brother named Lucifer, who rebelled against God while he (known then as Michael) who remained obedient. e. During his earthly exisence Michael was transformed into a man - Jesus and upon his death and resurrection, he went back to his former state as an invisible spirit. This is an attempt by the JW to show that Jesus Christ is not God and they appeal to the Bible to support their teachings but it is clear that the Bible contradicts their theology.
4. Salvation by Grace and eternal punishment. a. In JW theology, salvation is not a free gift from God based the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Rather their doctrines teach a salvation by works. b. The Bible teaches clearly that we cannot earn our salvation by our good works in Titues 3:5 "He saved us, not because of the righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy."(NIV) c. JW denies the existence of hell as a place of eternal punishment for the wicked. Instead they argue for painless extinction (absence of being) or the doctrine of "annihilationism".
5. False Prophecies and the "New World Translation" bible. a. The JW teach that second coming of Jesus Christ will take place in 1914 to set up a kingdom of God. Of course in 1914 nothing happened, so they now change their teachings to say that Jesus returned invisibly in 1914 and set up His kingdom in heaven. b. Jesus return is not an invisble as the Bible clearly teaches that "He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him."(Rev 1:7) c. To the JW, only 144,000 best and most faithful JW servants will live with Jesus in heaven and quote Rev 7:4 and 14:1,3 but fail to notice that the 144,000 are the tribes of Israel. All the rest of the JW will are barred from heaven and live instead on Paradise earth. c. In 1961, the JW published their own translation of the bible with the word" Jehovah" used for God in the entire New Testament. None of the authors and translators were credited or named. Many passages in their bible translation were changed to support their doctrines.
6. Conclusion. a. Uninformed Christians are easy prey for the JW who know proof texts for all their doctrines. They are taught to quote "Greek" and the "Hebrew" to confuse most Christians. Christians should spend time in systematic Bible study so that they know how to bibically support true doctrines. b. The deity of Jesus Christ should be the central issues in any discussion with JWs. We should be able to present a clear biblical case for the Christ's deity because their system crumbles when Christ is seen as Jehovah God. c. They too need to be loved and not hated, for sadly they have been deceived by a cultic system that does not allow them to think for themselves to see the true claims of Jesus.

Be That Girl Conference Aftershock
I'll get Lorna to write a report or something about Be That Girl Conference. And get somebody as a participant to write about what Be That Girl Conference is really all about. People, Be That Girl is not a social activity. It's not a haven for boys to wash their eyes with pretty girls. People, THAT PERSPECTIVE IS WRONG! And I'm sure for those who think that way don't want to go through what the pharoah of Egypt went through after trying to take Sarah (Abraham's wife) as his wife. God's watching and He doesn't like people who disturbs His daughters. Hope this year's Be That Girl Conference was awesome. Be right back with the reports and interviews soon!

Introduction to Cults
First of all, before I start typing an article here, I would like to point out the reason why I'm posting this. It's because there are many denominations these days and after you share the Gospel to your friends, you don't want them to get mixed up with some cult or something. Some cults go around "sharing" their "good news" to people which might confuse pre-believers and a baby spiritually person.
Introduction to Cults - Part One
Today is the day of many new religious cults and religions. Christianity in the eyes of many has become just another opinion in the whole sea of religious choices instead of being the light and the truth.
A cult can be defines as such - a distrotion of Biblical Christianity and/or a rejection of the histroric teachings of the Christian church. And it can also be called a group of people gathered about a specific person or person's misinterpretation of the Bible.
We are not being narrow minded by disagreeing with the view that "all roads lead to God" and instead believe the words of our Lord, "I am the way, the truth and the life: no other man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
Jesus did not say, "I am one of many equally good ways" or "I am a better way than the others". JEsus' claim is absolute (complete) and loyalty to Him, as Savior of the world is to take priority over all other claims of man and religions.
1. There are several reasons for this growth of such cults and religions. a. The bankruptcy of the materialistic values of our society promoted by our modern society. Materialism and humanism do not satisfy the spiritual needs and fulfillment that are part of every human being. b. People are also trying to find meaning of life via an emotional and mystical experience, which is precisely what is offered by many cults today. Many Christians in churches are also babies spiritually and have a very shallow understanding of Jesus, the bible and salvation. c. Some turn to cults due to loneliness or lack of personal identity. By submitting to the teachings and requirements of the cults, they hope to find the love, acceptance and fellowship they long for. In short, they think the cult met their human needs. d. We must note that many churches are guilty of loosing their spiritual vitality and revelane to many Christians. Instead of attracting those on spiritual quest, they kep away people with their religious rituals and empty spirituality/philosophy.
2. Some common structures of characteristics of cults.
a. Firstly, the belief system of most cults are closed mindedness. - they are usually not interested in a rational, logical, systematic evaluation of the facts - whether in the logicalness of the teachings of the leader or even scripture. - usually, the cult organization interprets the facts to the cultist and the founder is the ultimate authority and source of its pronouncements/teachings.
b. Secondly, most cults systems have a great dislike and opposition of Christians. - this is because most cults systems indoctrinate (program_ their disciples to believe that anyone who opposes their beliefs (usually Christians) are motivated by a satanic force. - also, most cults teach that they have been freed from religious exploitation, which they accuse historic Christianity of doing i.e. they are superior to Christianity and the they are not like the Christian clergy who make use of the people.
c. Thirdly, many, if not all cultic systems show a authoritative dogmatism and intolerance for any positions other then their own and use the authority of the supernatural. - many of the leaders of such cults like the Mormons and the Jehovah Witnesses, tell their disciples that God is the one who has revealed to them the new doctrine or the new practices. i.e. some new truth that the church does not know. - many of them also like to teach that their writings in their books have equal authority or even higher authority than the bible as their have recieved this revelation by prophecy from God. - many also teach "exclusiveness" ie. only they represent the true church on earth. All other "so called Christians" are deceived, going to hell and teach doctrines from Satan and demons. - most cults have a system that needs conformity, ambiguity and extrememes of belief to control their followers.
d. Fourthly, most cults have prefer to be isolated from the rest of the world. - within the structure of most historic Christian denominations, there is a peaceful co-existence of beliefs and opinions, no matter how diverse. - most cults have had their teachings refuted (proven false) but by isolating their members from the general Christian community, they can continue to teach wrong doctrines without fear their members will realize the truth. - Walter Martin writes that this is caused not only by a phychological blindness but also a spiritual blindness brought about by the isolation of man from God by the rebellion of human nature. Paul writes it very appropriately by saying, "whose minds the god of this world has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them." (2 Cor 4:4)
3. Other points of note a. Most cults liberally use/borrow Christian terms and terminology (almost always out of context) and sprinkle it with its terms whenever possible to its advantage. b.They also take advantage of the average Christian who is totally unknowledgeable of most Christian doctrines and its cardinal teachings as they are usually very equipped or taught by the cult to answer or counter you arguments. c. In thi way they normally can frustrate the average Christian by saying they are full agreement with what you say, when in reality they understand or interpret most Christian doctrines very differently from you.

Spirit Challenge
Friday, March 2, 2007
We finally used the Spirit Challenge module today. What's a Spirit Challenge you ask? Spirit Challenge is kinda like modules about our Christian life. It touches on EVERY aspect in a teenagers life - from speaking about the Great I Am, to finding the right partner in life. But I chose the module on Salvation where it speaks about new believers and pre-believers. I hope the chapters in this module will help all the members of Christian Fellowship to clear their doubts about the decision they've made, or gonna make, in recieving Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. Glory to GOD. Oh yeah, Spirit Challenge will be done on every 3rd Friday of the month. For this month, we're just replacing it for the month February.
Today's CF was conducted to suit the Spirit Challenge. The games were also from a part of the Spirit Challenge. Nothing really special today except the fact that we've started Spirit Challenge. Everything was going well till Mr. Arulsamy came and interupted. He asked what society we are. And Nisha (she was conducting the Spirit Challenge) answered him that we're having a discussion. Then he saw my Bible on the table and asked what was the Bible there for. Haha! Nisha told him that this was a Christian discussion. And Mr. Arulsamy was like, complimenting us by saying good, good. Haha! Well, I just would like to thank God for what He had done today. His protection is really on us. Now I just need to pray and have faith that Mr. Arulsamy won't bring this up during any meetings. He was the only teacher that saw us. I think Mrs. Norsiah saw the forfeiters and I doing the "Mississippi" with our backside but didn't bother. Another blessing from God! I pray that the Lord will always continue to bless us with protection and guidance. Amen!
After the meeting, we showed the Camp Meta promotion video, or better known as the Introduction video since the registration is gonna close! HAHAHA! So yeah, you STAR CF-ers are really blessed because you guys got to watch it today! Haha! And speaking about Camp Meta, 10 campers from STAR will be attending this camp. For you people who're gonna miss it, too bad, we'll try to bring back some pictures and some video clips of the camp =P. Then you'll know how much you've missed in the camp! HAHAHA! I'm mean, yes I'm mean =P.
Just would like to welcome two new comers into the STARCF family. One of them is Alex Ho from Form 4. And the other is a girl, sorry I forgotten her name. Not good in remembering Chinese names.. HahA! Well, God bless them and thank God for the people who brought them to CF. Glory to the Great I Am! Amen.
God bless.
